Renowned Israeli author Nava Semel, a member of the Advisory Board of Remember the Women Institute, will participate in a special event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on April 28th 2014 under the title "Learning about the Holocaust through the Arts."
Ms. Semel will speak about her groundbreaking novel And the Rat Laughed, and Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis will perform a reading of Ms. Semel's work. The novel And the Rat Laughed is an unconventional and unique Holocaust story that takes place in the past, present, and future. It is about brave human beings and the power of love and fantasy as means of survival.
The book is currently being made into a feature film in an international production, and directed by Janos Szasz. The acclaimed Hungarian director's latest film The Big Notebook won the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Award 2013, and was shortlisted for best foreign film in this year's Academy Awards. The film will be co-produced by Miki Zachar from Cinema Soleil France as well as production companies in Germany and Poland. Semel's book is featured in a chapter of Sexual Violence against Jewish Women during the Holocaust by Sonja M. Hedgepeth and Rochelle G. Saidel.
