Book Award Finalist in Holocaust Studies and Women’s Studies Categories
The Jewish Women of Ravensbrück Concentration Camp by Rochelle G. Saidel (University of Wisconsin Press) is a finalist for the 2004 National Jewish Book Awards in both the Holocaust category and the Women’s Studies category.

The winner in the Holocaust category is The Origins of the Final Solution by Christopher Browning (University of Nebraska Press and Yad Vashem), and the other finalist is After Such Knowledge by Eva Hoffman (Public Affairs Press).
The winner of the Women’s Studies Barbara Dobkin Award is Gender and Israeli Society: Women's Times: New Studies from Israel by Hannah Naveh (Vallentine Mitchell), and the other finalist is
Maiden of Ludimir by Nathaniel Deutsch (University of California Press)

The 54th Annual National Jewish Book Awards ceremonies, sponsored by the Jewish Book Council, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on December 1, 2004 at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street, New York.

Professor Rosa Ester Rossini Receives Academic Honor from Brazilian Government

Congratulations to Remember the Women Institute Advisory Board Member Prof. Rosa Ester Rossini, a full professor of Geography at University of São Paulo, Brazil. She was recently honored by the Brazilian Government and is receiving the National Scientific Merit Order from the President of Brazil.

Four members of the Advisory Board of Remember the Women Institute joined together to present a panel at the Twenty-Eighth Annual Conference of the German Studies Association, in Washington D.C. at the Marriott Crystal Gateway Hotel (Arlington, Virginia) on October 7-10, 2004.

Where Were the Women? A Report on “Teaching the Holocaust to Future Generations:
A Special Conference for Educators”
Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, August 8 – 11, 2004

“Teaching the Holocaust to Future Generations: A Special Conference for Educators” was held at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem from August 8 to 11. Remember the Women Institute Director, Dr. Rochelle G. Saidel, and Advisory Board Member, Noreen Brand (Director of Curatorial Services or Florida Holocaust Museum), presented workshops at the conference. Some 200 participants from 31 countries took part in the conference, which included a tour of the new history museum at Yad Vashem, now under construction. While the conference offered a rich potpourri of subjects in workshops and plenary sessions, gender and women and the Holocaust were hardly on the agenda. The only workshop dealing with these issues was presented by Dr. Saidel, who provided participants with a bibliography. With the exception of Shulamit Imber, Pedagogical Director, International School for Holocaust Studies of Yad Vashem, no woman was part of any of the plenary sessions, not even as a chairperson.

Professor John K. Roth, from the College of Claremont McKenna, “saved the day” in his plenary lecture on the Holocaust in interdisciplinary studies, when he emphasized the importance of studying gender and the Holocaust. He stressed that no one discipline, including History, “owns” the Holocaust. Correctly stating that the question of women during the Holocaust received little attention until the 1990’s, he pointed out that the horrors were different for women and men. Professor Roth, who also stated that scholars need modesty to realize the study of the Holocaust, modestly left out the fact that he was co-editor, along with Carol Rittner, of a germinal anthology on women and the Holocaust in 1993, Different Voices.

As one example of gender study, he mentioned the issue of the Nazis encouraging German women to bear children, but making sure that Jewish women did not. Studying the issues of women and gender “makes understanding the Holocaust more complex than before gender studies,” he said. An interdisciplinary study of the Holocaust, including gender studies, “takes away the comfort of simplicity.” Professor Roth mentioned the director and a number of members of the Remember the Women Institute Advisory Board as pioneers in bringing to the fore the questions of women and gender during the Holocaust.

Tennessee Holocaust Commission Summer Institute
Advisory Board member Dr. Nancy E. Rupprecht was the featured speaker at the 3-day Tennessee Holocaust Commission Summer Institute in June 2004 at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. The summer institute is a seminar designed to help secondary school teachers integrate the Holocaust into the high school curriculum in a variety of disciplines. Dr. Rupprecht delivered the keynote address and led a lecture-discussion section with the teachers. She reports that she was especially encouraged that so many of the participants in the seminar asked questions about and sought further source material concerning women in the Holocaust. In a session on using the Internet to research the Holocaust, she pointed out to the participants that this site, www.rememberwomen.org, is an important source.

DR. ROCHELLE G. SAIDEL RECEIVED AWARD
Dr. Rochelle G. Saidel, president and founder of Remember the Women Institute, received an Alumni Achievement Award for 2004 from the Ph.D. Alumni Association of the City University of New York on May 19, 2004, at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. She is among eight alumni and alumna who received awards from Dr. Frances Degen Horowitz, president of the Graduate Center.

Advisory Board Member Dr. Sonja Hedgepeth received the Ayne Cantrell Award in Women’s Studies for 2003-2004 from her university. Dr. Hedgepeth, a professor at Middle Tennessee State University, has done extensive work on women and the Holocaust. Currently on Sabbatical in Tel Aviv. Read her letter from Tel Aviv.
