POSTPONED: Remember the Women Institute commemorates the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) with a roundtable of experts discussing book bans in the United States.

This Zoom event will feature a round table discussion about book banning by experts from different fields of knowledge. Panel, in progress, includes:
- Cynthia L. Cooper, Award-Winning Playwright
- Angela Engel, founder and publisher, the Collective Book Studio
- Dr. Sonja M. Hedgepeth, Professor of German (ret.), Middle Tennessee State University
Moderated by Dr. Rochelle G. Saidel, Founding Director of Remember the Women Institute, the panel will share insights regarding which societal forces contribute to book bans; how bans in 2023 mirror the 1933 burning of 25,000 books in Nazi Germany; and how literature marketed toward students should be evaluated. The panel will also discuss constitutionality and legislation, as well as the danger of trained teachers and other professionals being censored by parents or guardians who are misinformed.
The event will also feature a performance of Cynthia L. Cooper’s new play “The Match,” which depicts Anna Seghers, a German Jewish author whose books were burned in Berlin in 1933.
Remember the Women Institute will offer insights into the future of Holocaust education by presenting new bibliographies of books and films about women and girls during the Holocaust, intended for students and school professionals. Film bibliography editor Samantha McLaughlin will provide a brief introduction to this project.
